Speke Resort, Munyonyo — African policymakers, technologists, business leaders, and educators gathered at the inaugural Africa Artificial Intelligence Summit to chart a bold and inclusive path for the continent’s AI future, with a strong call for intentional collaboration, local innovation, and transformative leadership.

Themed “Navigating Artificial Intelligence for Business Growth and Resilience”, the summit was convened by Django Tech Ltd and the Centre for Intrapreneurship and Executive Development (CEED) Uganda, in partnership with the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC). The event, held at Speke Resort in Munyonyo, served as a platform to align AI innovation with African realities, development goals, and business potential.

“Let AI Conversations Reach the People”

Delivering his address as the Chief Guest, George William Nyombi Thembo, Executive Director of Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), emphasised the need to democratize AI discourse.

“The real change happens when AI conversations leave the lab and enter communities. We must not fear AI, but shape it,” said Thembo. “AI must be about solving African problems in agriculture, healthcare, education, and service delivery.”

He called for deliberate partnerships across government, academia, private enterprise, and civil society, noting that AI can improve productivity by as much as 40%, referencing a Harvard study. However, he urged policymakers to avoid premature regulation, advocating instead for a deep understanding before policy formulation.

“Let’s Start with Strategy, Not Hype”

In a powerful address, Catherine Muraga, Managing Director at Microsoft Africa Development Centre, emphasised the importance of aligning AI deployment with real business challenges.

“Every business must ask: What is the strategy? Is it about improving productivity, enhancing customer experience, or scaling through new business models?” Muraga said.

She stressed the importance of data governance, leadership buy-in, and alternative education models such as micro-credentials to address Africa’s urgent talent gaps.

“The demand for AI talent is now—it cannot wait for three-year degree programmes. We must support youth through micro-learning, self-taught models, and platforms like Coursera and Udemy,” she added, citing a Kenyan fisherman turned Microsoft engineer as a testament to self-driven skilling.

“AI Is Not Optional. It’s Inevitable.”

Nicholas G. M. Wassajja, Country Director of CEED Uganda, echoed the summit’s urgency by highlighting CEED’s role in nurturing entrepreneurial leaders through peer learning, executive training, and tailored advisory support.

“This Summit is about more than technology. It’s about building people, businesses, and ecosystems ready to thrive in an AI-powered world,” he said.

Wassajja emphasised that CEED’s collaboration with Django Tech and UCC was a deliberate step toward promoting innovation and enterprise development tailored to Africa’s context.

“Let Africa Lead Its Own AI Future”

Speaking as both the 2nd Deputy Prime Minister of Buganda Kingdom and co-founder of the Africa Coffee Academy, Owek. Robert Waggwa Nsibirwa declared the Summit a launchpad for a pan-African movement toward responsible AI.

“AI must not be something done to us—it must be done by us, for us,” Nsibirwa stated. “We already have the technology, the brains, and the problems that AI can solve. What we need is leadership and scale.”

He highlighted ongoing smart innovations in African cities—from mobile-managed water pumps to smart homes in Kampala—and called for scaling such technologies continent-wide with an African face.

“This is not about minimum promises, but maximum possibilities. Let us ride the AI wave—and reshape it for Africa.”

Africa’s AI Moment Has Arrived

The Africa AI Summit 2025 marked a watershed moment in the continent’s digital transformation journey, bringing together leaders and institutions ready to drive inclusive innovation, homegrown talent, and policy foresight.

As echoed by multiple speakers: AI is no longer a future concept—it is Africa’s present and, if well harnessed, a key driver of prosperity, productivity, and resilience.
