The African Union on Friday commended the conduct of Uganda’s general elections and congratulated President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on his re-election.
In a statement after the Jan. 15 vote, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said the polls reflected the commitment of Ugandan institutions and citizens to democratic processes.
Youssouf congratulated Museveni on winning 71.61% of the vote, according to official results announced by the Electoral Commission.
He also thanked former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan for leading the joint African Union, Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) and Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) election observation mission.
The AU said the mission helped assess the credibility of the polls and contributed to transparency and public confidence in the electoral process.
Youssouf reiterated the commission’s commitment to promoting democracy, good governance and constitutional order across the continent. He also acknowledged Ugandans for their participation and commitment to peace, security and national development.
Uganda’s election drew regional and international attention, with several observer missions deployed as part of broader efforts to strengthen democratic governance in Africa.
