Drama, history and resilience defined an unforgettable Round of 16 at the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025, as Senegal powered into the quarter-finals, Mali edged Tunisia in a penalty shoot-out, and Mozambique finally tasted victory at the continental showpiece to reach the knockout stages for the first time.
Gueye and Mané Lead Senegal Charge
Former champions Senegal booked their place in the quarter-finals with a composed 3–1 comeback victory over Sudan in Tangier on Saturday night.
After falling behind to an early strike from Aamir Abdellah, the Lions of Teranga responded with authority. Midfielder Pape Gueye netted twice in the first half to swing the match Senegal’s way before substitute Ibrahima Mbaye wrapped up the win late on.
Beyond the goals, the night belonged to captain Sadio Mané, who provided two assists to become the outright leader on the AFCON all-time assists chart with nine.
“We reacted very well after going down 1–0,” said Gueye, who was named TotalEnergies Man of the Match. “It was a collective effort. Now we are through to the quarter-finals and we must prepare with the same focus.”
Senegal head coach Pape Thiaw praised his side’s mentality, saying:
“We needed to dig deep to come from a goal down. I give credit to my players for their focus and recovery.”

Diarra the Hero as Mali Eliminate Tunisia
In Casablanca, Mali produced one of the most dramatic moments of the tournament, defeating Tunisia 3–2 on penalties after a grueling 1–1 draw across regulation time and extra time.
Reduced to 10 men early in the first half, Mali showed remarkable discipline. Tunisia thought they had secured victory when Firat Chaouat scored in the 88th minute, but Lassine Sinayoko converted a stoppage-time penalty to force extra time.
Goalkeeper Djigui Diarra then delivered heroics in the shoot-out, earning Mali a quarter-final showdown with Senegal.
“From the start, we knew it would be difficult, especially after the red card,” said Diarra. “When it came to penalties, we said it was time to qualify. I was thinking about the Malian people.”
Mali head coach Tom Saintfiet hailed his players’ intelligence and resolve, while Tunisia coach Sami Trabelsi accepted responsibility for the elimination.
Mozambique Break the Curse and Make History
Perhaps the most emotional story of the round came in Agadir, where Mozambique finally ended their long AFCON drought with a stunning 3–2 victory over Gabon.

It was Mozambique’s first-ever win at the Africa Cup of Nations after 16 previous matches without success—and it secured their maiden qualification to the knockout stages in just their sixth appearance.
“I still don’t have the words to explain this feeling,” said veteran defender Reinildo Mandava. “I am proud of the team and proud of what the coach has done. Everyone at home is happy.”
Head coach Chiquinho Conde, who experienced AFCON heartbreak as a player decades ago, described the moment as deeply personal.
“I was part of this team for many years and we lost all the time,” Conde said. “To achieve this now, with this new generation, means everything to me.”
Mozambique now face a daunting Round of 16 clash against Nigeria, buoyed by belief and national pride.
Quarter-Final Picture Takes Shape
With Senegal set to meet Mali and Mozambique preparing for Nigeria, the Round of 16 has underlined AFCON’s enduring unpredictability—where giants respond under pressure, underdogs rise, and history is rewritten in front of passionate African crowds.
As the tournament moves into its decisive stages, belief, momentum and resilience are proving just as important as pedigree in the race for continental glory.
