Makerere University Empowerment Fund on Tuesday hosted a media breakfast to rally support for Makerere Run 2024, an event that holds great promise for the future of the university and, more importantly, for the many students who face daily challenges in their pursuit of education.
Speaking during the breakfast, Dr. Maggie Kigozi who is the Chairperson of the Board of Trustees Makerere University Endowment Fund, said students living with disabilities face unique challenges that can hinder their academic progress and overall university experience.
“Many of our students are still unable to read what the lecturer has shared as notes, hear what the teachers are saying or even physically reach some of these learning centres,” she noted.
According to her, by constructing a dedicated disability support unit, the university aims to provide these students with the necessary facilities, support services, and accommodations to help them thrive.
“This unit represents our aspirations of inclusivity, a place where all students can feel valued, supported, and empowered to achieve their full potential.”
She urged everyone to take an active role in this noble cause.
“By paying UGX20,000 and participating in the Makerere Run, you are not just contributing financially; you are making a powerful statement. You are standing in solidarity with our students living with disabilities and advocating for a more inclusive future.”
Edgar Tumusiime, Head of Marketing and Communications and Citizenship at NCBA Bank Uganda, said as part of the sponsorship, NCBA Bank will also provide a convenient payments platform, MuzuriPay, enabling alumni, friends, well-wishers, and the public to register for and pay for the run seamlessly.

Grace Nabwami, the Vice-Chair of Makerere University Disability Students Association, said students living with disabilities encounter numerous obstacles that make their academic journeys more difficult than they need to be.
“Students with physical disabilities face the challenge of navigating a campus that is not fully accessible. The #MakRun2024 is a significant step in the right direction. The proceeds from this event will go towards the construction of a dedicated Disability Support Unit at Makerere University,” she said.
According to her, this unit will be a sign of hope and a testament to their commitment to inclusivity.
“It will provide essential services such as accessible infrastructure, assistive technologies, and tailored support for students with disabilities.”
The Guild President, H.E Lubega Nsamba, underscored the urgency of #MakRun2024 noting the need to address the physical, technological, and attitudinal barriers that hinder the full participation of students with disabilities.
This includes: Accessible Infrastructure ie ensuring that buildings, classrooms, and facilities are accessible to all students which also means ramps, elevators, tactile signage, and other modifications that facilitate mobility and independence.
“Assistive Technologies like providing the necessary tools and technologies that aid in learning and communication. This includes screen readers, hearing aids, and other adaptive devices that bridge the gap between limitation and potential,” he noted.
He also cited support services like offering tailored support services such as sign language interpreters, note-takers, and personal assistants.
“These services are crucial for enabling students to engage fully in their academic pursuits and campus life.”
Lastly, he cited awareness and training to foster an inclusive culture through awareness campaigns and training programs for faculty, staff, and students.
