The Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) has extended the National Housing and Population Census 2024 to cater for Enumeration Areas that faced challenges at the start of the exercise.

“UBOS has extended the deadline for the Census enumeration in Uganda up until May 25th, 2024. This extension aims to ensure that every individual is included. If you haven’t been counted yet, please contact your Local Council leaders to schedule your enumeration session,” said UBOS Executive Director, Dr Chris Mukiza.

“Due to challenges experienced at the start of enumeration, we do not want to leave anyone behind and thus found it prudent to have an extension of the Census exercise. In case you haven’t been counted, this is your time. Also, reach out to your LC to have an appointment booked for you.”

According to Dr Mukiza, the Bureau noted that there are Enumeration Areas (EAs) which could not start on 10th May 2024 due to login difficulties.

“You may recall that the login challenges were resolved within a period of one to four days. In addition, management developed generic logins for villages to enable work to begin, which became effective on the 4th day,” stated Dr Mukiza who is also the Census Commissioner.

He said another challenge was the geography of some villages missing from the system owing to incomplete listing during mapping.

There are also hard-to-reach areas where enumeration was constrained, making the pace of enumeration slow.

“As a result, such areas have been given an opportunity to continue with the enumeration until they complete their assignments this waiver (for mopping up) shall, however, not exceed 25th May 2024.”

During this period, he directed, supervisors should ensure complete coverage and quality assurance.

“This is therefore to inform you to request the Household Heads that have not been enumerated during the past days to make an appointment with their LC1 chairpersons to agree on the fate and time when they can be enumerated before the end of the waiver period.”

According to him, some districts have finished and even surpassed the 100% mark like Budaka and Fort Portal.

“Meaning new households were also identified. By midnight, we were at over 84% having been covering 1.2 million to 1.4 million households daily.”
