Club Guvnor, Uganda’s old entertainment nightspot, will cease Saturday night operations starting June 2024.
In a notice, the club said this was due to the sharp drop in business.
“The club shall remain available for hire on Saturdays,” read a notice from management.
Guvnor, according to the statement, is also available for hire on other days apart from Friday.
“Please note we shall remain open on Fridays when the club hosts Oldies night (First Friday of the month), Aka Dope Band (2nd Friday of the month), Afro-Fusion night (3rd Friday of the month) and Afrigo Band every last Friday of the month.
Founded by entertainment entrepreneur Charlie Lubega, older generations knew the club as Kololo Club. Another knew it as Angenoir. Gen Z call it Guvnor.
Nightlife dynamics have changed in Kampala. Lounges and bars have become preferred joints. It appears GenZ who patronise Kampala nightlife avoid clubs with entrance charges.
Does the downsizing of Guvnor’s business mark the end of an era?
