Kampala, Uganda – 9th May 2024 marked a historic milestone as Uganda and Cuba celebrated half a century of steadfast diplomatic relations.

“This journey of friendship, cooperation, and mutual respect has transcended geographical distances, reaffirming the enduring bond between our people,” said Bagiire Vincent Waiswa, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Since the establishment of diplomatic ties on 9th May 1974, Uganda and Cuba have consistently fostered close political, economic, and social relations, forging a partnership grounded in shared values and common aspirations, in a changing global environment.

Consequently, Uganda and Cuba have cooperated closely in the international arena, realizing joint support in forging consensus with and within the developing group of countries.

According to Bagiire, the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding on Promotion of Counter Trade between the two on 18th January 2024 in Kampala demonstrates the commitment of both nations to deepen their bilateral ties.

“This took place on the eve of the 19th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement, underscoring the importance of multilateral platforms in advancing bilateral cooperation; and follows from the two agreements signed in Havana, in September 2023: on collaboration in the fields of Science, Technology and Innovation, and on Regular Diplomatic Consultations.”

He said high-level visits between Uganda and Cuba continue to play a pivotal role in strengthening the bonds of friendship between the two nations and provide invaluable opportunities for dialogue, collaboration, and exchange.

The most recent was the visit by the Cuban First Vice President, H.E. Salvador Antonio Valdes in January 2024 during the Summits of the G77 & China and the NAM. In September 2023, the Vice President of Uganda, H.E. Maj. Jessica Alupo represented Uganda at the Summit of the G77 on STI in Havana, Cuba.

Cuba’s longstanding support to Uganda through collaborative efforts in the fields of health and education has been instrumental in improving the lives of countless Ugandans. The enduring partnership in these critical sectors underscores the spirit of solidarity and cooperation that defines the relationship between the two countries.

“As we commemorate this historic milestone, we reaffirm our commitment to further deepening and diversifying the bonds of friendship and cooperation between Uganda and Cuba. The journey of the past fifty years serves as a testament to the resilience of our partnership which is founded on the need to serve humanity,” he noted.

He added: “On this momentous occasion, we extend our warmest congratulations and best wishes to the governments and peoples of Uganda and Cuba. May the friendship between our two nations continue to thrive and flourish for generations to come.”
