The family of the late Daudi Kitaburaza Makobore, in collaboration with partners, has inaugurated the Kimbugu Community Initiative. This initiative aims to foster the development of water sports and tourism in the vicinity of Lake Kimbugu, situated in Nyarushanje, Rukungiri District.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Hellen Kitaburaaza Bugaari emphasized that the project is a realization of her departed brother’s (Daudi Makobere) vision to harness the potential of the water body for the community’s enrichment and empowerment.

The project encompasses various water sports activities such as canoeing, kayaking, swimming, and spot fishing, among others.

Lake Kimbugu, nestled in the hills of Nyarushanje, Rubabo in Rukungiri District, spans an estimated depth of more than 7 meters and covers an area of approximately 400 square meters. Initially, the water body was a modest fishing pond that gradually expanded to form the lake.

Kitaburaaza recounted Daudi Makobere’s aspiration to uplift the lakeside community through diverse initiatives, which unfortunately couldn’t be realized following his untimely demise several years ago.

“Our brother Daudi had initiated this project before his passing. He collaborated with the Uganda Canoe Kayak Federation to develop water sports on the lake. Regrettably, he passed away. Nevertheless, as a family and friends, we resolved to carry forward his vision,” Kitaburaaza stated.

She stressed that they couldn’t allow their brother’s dream to perish. “He was dedicated to the people, so we couldn’t let his dedication fade away. We are gratified by the Federation’s partnership, the community’s support, towards various developments,” she affirmed.

Kitaburaaza appealed to the government to improve the road connectivity to the center to facilitate transportation and visitor access. Additionally, she urged for measures to address the water scarcity issue, as the community lacks access to clean running water.

Meanwhile, Rujumbura County MP and Security Minister Rtd Maj. Gen Jim Muhwezi commended the family for the initiative, highlighting its potential to benefit the community. He encouraged locals to embrace self-help and communal projects to produce marketable items for the tourism-driven market around Lake Kimbugu.

Muhwezi assured that the government would include the road under the tourism infrastructure, ensuring year-round accessibility and maintenance. He pledged to collaborate with area MPs to empower the community further.

Representing the Ministry of Tourism, James Mboijana expressed gratitude to the family for the initiative, foreseeing an expansion of tourism products in Western Uganda. He affirmed the ministry’s commitment to supporting the family and the initiative to unlock its full potential.
