According to lawyer and advocate, Fox Odoi-Oywelowo, apart from being one of the original 27 NRA fighters, Jack Mucunguzi designed the architecture for anti-smuggling at Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) hence the increase in revenue collection.

Col Mucunguzi was among the last survivors of the original 27 fighters who escorted President Museveni to start the 1980 armed rebellion.

“He was one of the 27 who attacked Kabamba with me and he was the commander of Section 4 of the nucleus of the NRA,” Museveni said.

The Battle of Kabamba (6 February 1981), was the result of an attempt by Popular Resistance Army (PRA) rebels to capture an armoury at the Kabamba Military Barracks, defended by the Tanzania People’s Defence Force (TPDF) and Uganda National Liberation Army (UNLA).

The battle marked the PRA’s entry in the Ugandan Bush War.

Col Mucunguzi was among Museveni’s “Original 27” fighters who attacked the Mubende-based barracks.

When Museveni reorganised his rebel outfit into six units, named after his adored African leaders, Jack Mucunguzi, who commanded Gamal Abdel Nasser (along Gulu Road).

“Condolences to his family and friends.  May his soul rest in eternal peace,” Museveni said in a condolence message.
