The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Martins Okoth Ochola, has instructed all territorial commanders to ensure the safety and security of pilgrims walking through their jurisdictions.

He tasked the commanders to escort them (pilgrims) and provide protection to them while sleeping at churches, schools and community centres.

The IGP also restricted all movements under the cover of darkness at night and early morning.

“Further identify those who cannot endure the journey for medical attention. The police ambulances are deployed on all major highways for medical evacuation and emergency response.”

The police urged the pilgrims trekking to Namugongo to stay with the group and not be discouraged but draw strength from the generation of Christians who have made the spiritual journey.

“Due to the unpredictable weather, they should carry warm clothings, IDs, mobile phones, light bags, reflectors and ensure they have transport money or transport arranged, for their return journey. We further urge the pilgrims, especially new comers to be vigilant and cautions while going through the heavy traffic, and watch against criminals and fraudsters who target phones and other valuables,” the new security measures and advisory from the IGP read.

Before and on June 3, Christians trek to Namugongo Martyrs Shrine to celebrate the Uganda Martyrs.

These come from the neighbouring countries of DRC, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi and South Sudan, among others, in the quest to renew their faith.
