Makerere VC Nawangwe Suspends Student over Illegal Demonstration  

The Makerere University Vice Chancellor, Professor Barnabas Nawangwe, has suspended a student for allegedly engaging in disruptive behaviour and organising illegal demonstrations at the university.

Nawangwe, in a May 8 letter said Adonia Kizza, a student from the College of Education and External Studies, allegedly engaged in acts intended to cause anarchy at the University. 

“As you may know, engaging in disruptive behaviour and organising illegal demonstrations often have a profound impact on the image of the University and the entire Higher Education sector. I have received a report that today 8th May 2023 you were involved in acts of indiscipline together with other students that are yet to be identified, that are intended to cause anarchy at the University,” he said.

Nawangwe said the student allegedly participated in an illegal demonstration, during which he beat fellow students, and disrupted teaching and learning activities that were ongoing in the College of Education & External Studies, College of Humanities and Social Sciences as well as the School of Law calling for defiance and disruption of University activities. 

“These aforesaid acts are in breach of the Makerere University Students Regulation (9) (a) and (b) (v) and (iii),” he said.

“Because of your alleged involvement in the above illegal activities, and to ensure the safety and security of members of the University Community and property, as well as peaceful activities of the University, I hereby suspend you from Makerere University with immediate effect and until further notice to allow for further investigations.”

The student will be invited for interaction and further discussion on the matter on a date to be communicated in due course by the University Disciplinary Committee.

“By copy of this letter, the Dean of Students and University Secretary/ Secretariat to the University Disciplinary Committee are requested to commence disciplinary proceedings against you. Further to this, the Chief Security Officer is required to commence criminal proceedings against you and to ensure that you vacate the University premises immediately and that you do not appear at any installations of Makerere University until your suspension is lifted,” the letter read.
