The newly-elected Makerere University Guild President, Cabinet and Guild Representatives have been sworn in to effectively commence duties.
The swearing-in-ceremony took place at the CTF 2 Auditorium, presided over by the Deputy Vice Chancellor of Finance and Administration, Henry Alinaitwe, representing the Vice Chancellor Professor Barnabas Nawangwe.
The event was also graced by both the outgoing and incoming students’ representatives, a number of guild representatives from Halls of Residence, Colleges, Schools, and Persons with Disabilities, among others.
Makerere University, this month, held its guild elections that were won by Maseruka Robert.
According to results announced by Levi Tshilumba, the Electoral Commission Chairperson, Maseruka, a third-year student doing Journalism and Communication garnered 2,558 votes to beat his closest rival Hilary Oremo Odwee who got 2,531 votes, followed by Akankunda Sabiiti who got 2,334 votes.
He replaces Alionzi Lawrence in office, who at the same event, asked him (Guild President) and his cabinet to always hold and spearhead the students’ interest above his.
“All your intentions are good but not always right in the students’ interests, you represent the students’ interests, don’t try to influence yours, just represent the students,” Alionzi told the new Guild President.
Alionzi asked Maseruka to always promote and seek dialogue and intellectualism.
After swearing in, Maseruka said it was an honour to serve the mighty institution.
He asked all the elected leaders to strive to deliver to the students’ expectations and promised to bring light to all ‘Makerereans’.
“I urge you all not to look at this victory as my victory, but rather as a spark of light for all Makerereans. The question to ask now is what we shall together do for the 89th Guild and Makerere,” he stated.
In her speech, the Dean of Students, Winifred Kabumbuli, applauded the outgoing Guild leadership for the good leadership they have exhibited during their term of service.
The Deputy Vice Chancellor of Finance and Administration Alinaitwe congratulated the newly elected leaders for the triumph but also thanked the outgoing guild for its stead leadership.
“I congratulate all those who stood for various posts and were successfully elected as well as those who have been appointed in various positions of the executive leadership of the guild, I warmly congratulate you. I also thank the voters who turned up to vote in big numbers,” he said.
He noted that the outgoing leadership believed a lot in dialogue and intellectualism, asking the incoming leadership to pick a leaf.
