Accidents Claim 289 Lives, Leave 965 injured in Month of July

Police have revealed that Uganda in the month of July recorded 1,254 accident victims.

Out of these, 289 people died and 965 sustained injuries.

Faridah Nampiima, the Public Relations Officer Traffic Police Directorate, said a total of 1,338 accidents occurred during this period and out of these 234 accidents were fatal, 731 were serious and 373 were minor.

She revealed that a total of 38,771 traffic offenders were arrested and issued with EPS tickets on various traffic offences at various checkpoints in the whole country in the month of July 2022.

“Among these, reckless driving 6,599, DMCs 8,327, invalid driving license 3,724, using or permitting use on the road a vehicle without any insurance law for that use 3,105, speeding 1,774, Not wearing seat belts 2,823, using hand held mobile telephone while driving 732, Riding m/c without wearing a crash helmet 3,070, carrying more than one passenger on the motor cycle 822, among others,” Nampiima told reporters at a press conference.

She cautioned those operating private vehicles and station wagon [drones] to offer public transport without a license to stop it immediately.

“As you are aware, section 105[1] of the traffic and Road Safety Act 1998 [as amended 2020] makes it an offence to use a vehicle for the carriage of passengers or goods for hire or reward when not licensed to do so or in breach of license and on conviction a fine of not less than fifteen currency points [300000/=] and not exceeding one hundred currency points [2000000/=] or imprisonment not exceeding year or both,” Nampiima said.
