Opposition figure Dr Kizza Besigye and political activist Samuel Lubega Makaku have been denied bail and further remanded to Luzira prison.
The duo appeared before Buganda Road Court magistrate, Asuman Muhumuza, on Friday and applied for bail.
The magistrate rejected the bail application saying the two accused were granted bail a week ago and would not let court to be turned into “a theatre of politics”.
The magistrate further argued that there is no guarantee that the two will not be re-arrested on the same charges or other offences.
Magistrate Muhumuza then further renamed them until 1st July.
The pair was arrested on June 14 while protesting in downtown Kampala against skyrocketing commodity prices in the country.
They were detained at Naggalama Police Station in Mukono District.
Kampala Lord Mayor, Erias Lukwago, told journalists outside the court that he will appeal against the court ruling.
He claimed that magistrate Muhumuza’s reasons hinge on “pure politics”.
“This is a purely political rather than a judicial decision. The magistrate has not addressed himself to our justice system because someone is presumed innocent until proven guilty,” Lukwago said.
He added: “The two have never been convicted of any offence. This is a matter we can’t just let go like that. We are going to appeal in High Court against this particular decision.”
