High Court has issued two separate injunctions halting the nationwide Local Council One (L.C1) elections that were scheduled for next week on November 21.

The Jinja High Court on Monday in its injunction stopped the Electoral Commission from conducting the much anticipated elections until a pending court application is decided on.

The application was filed by Allan ? Alibwani, a Ugandan citizen agaist the Electoral Commission as the respondent.

Uganda has not held elections for L.C1 Chairpersons and committees, the lowest leadership position of government for the last 16 years.

Mondays court injunction issued by High Court Justice Jesse Byaruhanga Rugyema read; “An interim order is hereby issued against the respondent [Electoral Commission], his agents and servants restraining them from conducting the elections scheduled for this November until the main application is heard and determined”.

The injunction restrains the preparation for the said elections for a period of 60 days effective its issuance.

A similar restraining order was issued on the same day by High Court Registrar, Sarah Langa stopping the Electoral Commission and the Attorney General from organizing and or conducting the village council elections.

The injunction followed another application filed by a one James Tweheyo who argues that the LC1 elections should not coincide with the ongoing Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) exams yet majority of the S.6 students are eligible voters.

The implications of the elections if they proceeded would be disenfranchising a large potion of Ugandan voters.
