Uganda made a false start to the 2023 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers, losing 2-0 to Algeria.
In the game played on Saturday at the July 5th 1962 Stadium, Uganda Cranes were subdued by the home side who scored a goal in either half.
Aissa Mandi found the opening goal in the 28th minute, scoring with his upper body from close range.
A minute later, Uganda had the chance to level matters when Khalid Aucho won a penalty after being pulled down in the area.
The resultant penalty was, however, missed by Faruku Miya who opted to shoot in the middle thus giving goalkeeper Mustafa Zeghba the chance to save.
Uganda looked an improved side in the second half with coach Milutin Sredojevic ringing several changes.
Skipper Emmanuel Okwi and Miya were withdrawn for Steven Sserwadda and Martin Kizza a few minutes after recess.
There were further changes with Hakim Kiwanuka, Derrick Kakooza and Bobosi Byaruhanga coming in place of Allan Okello, Milton Karisa and Marvin Youngman.
With ten minutes to full-time, Algeria doubled their advantage through Youcef Belaili whose low drive hit the base of the post before finding its way to the back of the net.
Uganda will now shift focus to Wednesday’s clash against Niger at St. Mary’s Stadium, Kitende.
