A court application has been filed before the High Court to have the four suspects who were arrested on Tuesday after securing bail produced.
The four people Umalu Magade, Ahmed Ssefuka, Ibrahim Kisa and Abdu Majidu Ojegere who are suspected to have killed former Police spokesperson Andrew Felix Kaweesi were arrested by unknown men and their location remains unknown.
The four were arrested shortly after they had appeared before the Nakawa Chief Magistrate and granted bail. They had been on remand for six months without committed for trial.
This has prompted their lawyers Wameli and Company Advocates to file an application to have the Attorney General produce the four suspects as their relatives are worried and non of the security agencies has cooperated in availing information on their location.
“The applicants have been taken and held in locations unknown to their relatives and family and they are thus being held incommunicado, illegally and unlawfully by agents of the Attorney General,” the application filed on November 9 read in part.
The lawyers say the four individuals have not been produced before any known court of law nor have they been formally charged in any court and that their continued detention is “unlawful and unconstitutional”.
“The relatives can not access them since their whereabouts are unknown and all efforts to find this out from the Attorney General’s agents/servants have proved to be futile,” the lawyers for the accused persons say.
The application states that such unlawful detention is a violation of the applicants’ rights to personal liberty.
On Wednesday, the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) owned up to the arrest of the four after uncertainty had mounted within the public. The UPDF spokesperson Brig Richard Karemire told the press that the four persons were arrested for more serious crimes and suspected links to terror organization Allied Democratic Forces (ADF).
