“We would however like to emphasize that the National Theatre main building was not affected and is safe and intact,” the statement added.

It further explained that the police fire brigade were notified and responded in time and were able to put out the fire.

UNCC emergency team is working with the Uganda Police to Investigate and establish the cause of the fire.

Preliminary investigation reveals that the fire was caused by a welder who was hired by the owner of one of the kiosks who has since been arrested and is helping police with investigations.

Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire identified the suspect as Sanjo Vincent, a welder.

“The Board and management is committed to protecting and preserving the National Theater, which is an important National historical cultural heritage.”

“We would like to thank the public for their concern and love for the National Theater,” the statement added.
