ICPAU Set out to Increase Numbers of Professional Accountants

The Institute of Certified Public Accounts of Uganda (ICPAU) has called upon accountants in the country to use their numbers to push for the economic growth and development of Uganda.

The call was made by the President of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Uganda (ICPAU), CPA Constant Othieno Mayende during the release of the March 2022 Examination diet results by the Public Accountants Examinations Board (PAEB).

The examinations were exclusive for the CPA course only and held in March 2022, at the Uganda Manufacturers Association (UMA) Lugogo showgrounds.

Mayende said that there is a notable increase in the number of candidates that show up for the examinations.

“Our examinations continue to lead the premier accountancy qualification on international standards and compete favorably well with the rest in the world. With our qualification, our members are able to world in any part of the world,” Mayende said.

Mayende said that, “Our numbers continue to grow and we are optimistic that in the short and medium term, we should be able to completely occupy our space. I would encourage that we continue to ramp up our numbers.”

He noted that the institute has so far admitted close to 3500 members adding that once more numbers are registered the accountants shall be able to confidently serve the country based on their mandate as highlighted in the accountants Act.

Adding, “In economies where the number of accountants is up, you actually see that it is reflected in the level of development. We have a duty as accountants to ramp up the numbers and I know that will have a direct correlation with development of the country,”

The president as well congratulated the successful candidates upon completion of the CPA exams.

He however encouraged students to always prepare for the exams on time which is so important in passing the exams.

On his part, PAEB Chairperson, CPA Geoffrey Byamugisha noted that whereas 3,081 candidates had registered for the March 2022 examinations, the number of candidates who turned up was 2,890, representing a 93.8% presence compared to 94.1% in March 2021 when this diet was first introduced.

Byamugisha said that the average pass rate has improved from 36.4% in March 2021 to 39.6% in March 2022 and female students performed better than their male counterparts.

“The students wishing to sit for examinations in 2022 are advised to re-engineer their methods of preparation to ensure best chances for passing,” Byamugisha noted.
