The Speaker of Parliament Jacob Oulanyah has tasked the Government to table before Parliament a detailed report on the perpetual collapse of buildings in Kampala claiming lives of innocent Ugandans.

This followed a matter of National importance raised by Nakawa West MP, Ronald Balimwezo on Tuesday following the recent collapse of a multi-storey building in Kampala.

Over the weekend, a four storey building collapsed in Kisenyi and six people have so far been confirmed to have lost their lives while several left with injuries.

Balimwezo told Parliament that atleast 4 structures in Kampala have collapsed and claimed lives within the year 2021.

He cited two buildings in Kansanga, one along Kampala Road and the recent one in Kisenyi.

“Many buildings have been collapsing and we have lost lives, we need to know what measures has government put in place to make sure that there is no further collapse of buildings,” Balimwezo said.

He also demanded to know what has so far been done to the culprits that whose negligence has led to the death of many innocent Ugandans.

In response, the Minister of State for Works, Musa Ecweru, promised to table the report on the collapse of buildings before Parliament as soon as possible.

“Immediately I heard of this recent development which is extremely regrettable, I have committed this board and the teams responsible for investigation to quickly come out with an answer on what happened and if need be we shall bring the culprits to book,”

He added that, “I will come with a comprehensive report of what happened and all the interventions that we have taken.”

Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has since come out to deny ever clearing the construction of the said building noting that the owner had defied all the warnings stopping him from raising the building.

The Authority attributed the perennial fall of buildings on developer Haruna Kiggundu for employing unqualified personnel, poor work methods, poor materials, inadequate designs among others.
