Wakiso district councillors have rejected the UgShs 100,000 disbursed to their accounts in form of allowances, saying it is too little. At least 58 of the 102 councillors have sent back the money to district accounts, arguing that they would rather work without any allowances.

Speaking at a press conference at Rock Gardens in Wakiso on Wednesday, Abasi Kanamwanja, the Ndejje ward councillor, said that they received communication from the technical wing via Watsapp informing them that they had posted UgShs 100,000 on their accounts.

Kanamwanja said that they resolved to return the money since they don’t know where it came from.

Jackeline Mirembe, the councillor Katabi town council said that ever since they took their oath of office they have never had any council meeting but surprisingly she received money on her account and doesn’t know why she is being paid.

Faith Ruth Nakanwangi, the Kireka ward representative in Kira Municipality said that when she approached the relevant authorities she was informed that the money was meant for their predecessors.

The Speaker Wakiso District, Nasif Najja, said that the problem is that their council has expanded from 52 to 102 councillors. He explained that the money in question was budgeted for by the previous council but when they got the chance of getting the money they had to divide it among the current councillors.

Matia Lwanga Bwanika, the Wakiso District LC V Chairperson blamed the problem on miscommunication between the councilors and technical staff responsible for paying the allowances. He explained that the money they gave out as allowances to the new councilors was money meant for the old councilors whose term expired and used to receive a monthly allowance of UgShs 120,000.
