The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), an opposition political party, has decided to close down all offices in the country as a safety-first approach amid surge in cases of COVID19.

Speaking to reporters at the party’s headquarters in Kampala, John Kikonyogo, the FDC spokesperson also asked its employees to work from home.

“FDC has decided that effective tomorrow Tuesday, our headquarters and all our offices in the country will be closed until we communicate otherwise,” Kikonyogo said.

“Our telephone contacts will be reachable but offices will be out of reach to ensure that our staff and members are protected from acquiring the infection,” he added.

He appealed to leaders of the party at different levels to act as their agents in sensitizing the masses on how to protect themselves from getting the virus.

Uganda has registered a spike in COVID-19 cases since mid-April when the second wave began, registering an increase of more than 130 per cent in recent weeks.

To mitigate the spread of COVID-19, the government imposed a partial lockdown for 42-days, including a travel ban between districts outside the Kampala Metropolitan Area, closure of schools and strict enforcement of curfew hours, among other measures.

The country registered 9,042 new COVID19 cases from June 5 to June 11. On average, the country has had 1,292 new cases daily. At this rate, Uganda will have nearly 40,000 new cases in only a month.
