Police in Kampala is holding eight students from Kyambogo University who were Thursday morning arrested while protesting against online learning by the University.

According to ASP Luke Owoyesigire, the Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson, the strike was organized by guild leaders who mobilized fellow students to participate as a way of showing their dissatisfaction.

The students wanted online learning stopped on allegations that it is too expensive for them to afford. They also demanded that this semester is extended to a later date.

ASP Owoyesigire says that instead, the students turned rowdy prompting officers from Jinja Road Police Station to swing into action to restore normalcy at the University.

“They became unruly but police dispersed them and brought the situation under control and we have managed to arrest eight of these students,” ASP Owoyesigire told this news website.

The arrested students include Kato Eriasa, Kasozi Bright, Namara Claire, Nkurunziza Alphonse, Malingumu Ivan, Ssali Geoffrey, Waiswa Calvin and Mbazira John who have since been charged with inciting violence and are currently detained at Jinja Road Police Station as investigations continue.
