Police in Uganda have confirmed the arrest of one Guy Smith, an American citizen living in Fort Portal, on allegations of engaging in subversive activities.
Guy who is married to a Ugandan, Sharon Tusiime, was arrested on Saturday night by security operatives from his house in Fort Portal City.
Tusiime earlier told this SoftPower News that the arrest took place when she was away from home but received a phone call from her husband that armed police officers traveling in three unmarked cars were taking him away.
Tusiime said that her husband who has lived in Uganda for over 20 years, refused to open the door but the security personnel broke into the house before whisking him away.
“In the morning, I reached out to the District Police Commander who only told me that ‘he is in safe hands’ without delving into details of his whereabouts,” she narrated to our reporter.
She then embarked on a search including informing the American Embassy in Uganda.
Police spokesperson, CP Fred Enanga has Monday evening confirmed the arrest of Guy Smith and revealed that he is detained at the Police’s Special Investigations Division (SID) in Kireka.
“A task team from the Special Investigations Division, arrested Guy Smith, an American National, on 21.03.2021, from Fort Portal for his alleged involvement in anti-government subversive activities,” said the police spokesperson.
Enanga added that, “He remains in custody at SID, Kireka, as inquiries continue. Any new information will be communicated accordingly.”
According to Tusiime, the husband, 63, who is from Kentucky, USA retired as a maintenance manager of a couple of lodges some years back and has lived in Fort Portal with her and children for the past two years but has been in Uganda for more than 20 years.
She says the suspect is recovering from eye surgery he had in Mbarara last week.
By press time, Sharon still had no information about where the husband is being detained. She was shocked on learning from our reporter that he is held at SID Kireka for subversive activities.
