The newly elected Busiro North Member of Parliament, Paul Nsubuga has Tuesday afternoon been released on bail after days in police custody on allegations of stealing a mobile phone worth Shs 80,000.

Nsubuga was arrested on Saturday after being reported to police on June 3, 2019 by a one Gloria Namengo, a businesswoman and a resident of Kawempe Division in Kampala City.

Gloria claims that the stolen mobile phone, an itel 5625 silver in colour had an Airtel simcard with mobile money Shs4.5million.

According to Namengo, on 3rd June 2019 at around 1pm at Inseria properties Nakasero opposite Shoprite Entebbe Road, Nsubuga entered her mobile money business premises for a transaction and instead walked away with her phone.

The incident was captured by the CCTV cameras installed in the shop.

As such, on Saturday, the MP elect was arrested from Serena Hotel Kampala and detained at the Central Police Station in Kampala on allegations of theft as investigations were going on, according to Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson, ASP Luke Owoyesigire.

Owoyesigire also noted that police received many other victims complaining of the same person that he used the same trick to steal their phones and money stored on mobile money system.

Nsubuga has today been produced before Court at Buganda Road, on the same charges and released on bail. He will now defend himself against the accusations made against him in Court.

Nsubuga’s arrest had been described by many of his supporters of members of the opposition political party, National Unity Platform to which he belongs, as politically motivated, but Owoyesigire dismisses the claim on grounds that no body is above the law.

“Members of the public should know that no matter one’s status or political affiliation, they will always face the law, if caught in conflict with the law.”
