Police have arrested over 180 people during the concluded Kampala city festival.
According to Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson Emilian Kayima, despite the fact that the events were peaceful, some groups of youths were involved in criminality prompting police to arrest them.
“We have over 180 suspects in different police stations who were engaging in different types of crime including pickpocketing, assault and theft,” Kayima said.
He noted that those apprehended will be screened and by the end of the day Monday, those with cases to answer will have their files prepared so that they can appear in court.
“Those without cases to answer will by the end of the day be released,” he added.
Kayima also noted that police had received 60 cases of missing children but some of the children have since been recovered and reunited with their parents.
“By today (Monday), only six were still with the Child and Family Unit at the Central Police Station.”
The police mouthpiece revealed that this year’s Kampala city carnival was successful, which he attributed to security agencies led by police that ensured people were safe and secure.
This years arrests (180) were relatively low compared to 299 people that were apprehended during the 2016 festival for pickpocketing.
