Kabula County MP James Kakooza  who is an NRM leaning independent, says he will inform the president who will be meeting the MPs as the NRM party chairman about reservations from the public.

He believes that the meeting in Entebbe will not change the views of the people and MPs that the bill will not solve current land problems.

“So many bills have been amended once subjected to Parliament; any bill by government is subject to amendment, as long as it is tabled members can amend it basing on the current problems.”

Meanwhile, Kassanda South MP Simeo Muwanga Nsubuga wants the Government to set up a commission for fair and prompt land compensation.

Nsubuga made the proposal ahead of the NRM Parliamentary caucus meeting with President Yoweri Museveni over a bill providing for compulsory land acquisition for development projects.

The MPs set off to State House at 2pm but Nsubuga said that the bill has received strong opposition on all sides including the MPs from the ruling party.

The bill seeks to amend article 26 of the Uganda Constitution that provides for prior, fair and prompt compensation before land acquisition which government says has been delaying projects.

“We know the problems affecting our people in as far as land is concerned, so don’t expect us to agree with the amendment bill; there are issues that must be catered for,” Nsubuga said.

Nsubuga highlighted that the bill is silent on protecting several institutions’ land like that of churches and mosques which can be dislodged due to government projects.

“As we are going, people should have confidence and trust in us that we shall not let them down as far as this bill is concerned,” Nsubuga observed.
