The Police Constable, together with Nkurunziza Kenneth, a UPDF soldier at a rank of a Private, were on a foot patrol when the shooting occurred.

Police says that while on patrol, the two came across a bar owned by a one Niyonzima Valence which was still operating at around 10:30pm. The suspects who were armed with an AK47 then entered the bar and ordered the owner to close and all the customers to leave immediately.

This caused commotion and in the process bullets were discharged in a way of calming down the situation.

It is in that process that Lawrence (the victim) who was standing a distance from the bar was hit by a bullet. He had just returned home from watching a football match and he was standing at his house knocking at the door such that his wife can open for him.

That is when he got hit by the bullet and fell down instantly. The victim was then rushed to S.t Francis Hospital Mutolere in a critical condition.

The Police spokesperson for Kigezi Region, Elly Matte said the UPDF soldier is still at large.

Matte said the incident was unfortunate, adding that Police will ensure that the two security officers explain why they did not take other civil means to resolve the situation.

“This is an unfortunate incident. This is why we must do everything for these officers to explain why they didn’t take precautionary measures at that early hour,” he said.

“If there was anything wrong, there are professional measures to use other than endangering the lives of people”.
