Hearing of Stella Nyanzi’s Case Against Makerere Resumes Today

The case in which Makerere University researcher, Dr Stella Nyanzi sued the university for failing to reinstate her, resumes for hearing today Wednesday February 13.

She accuses the University of undermining the directives by the staff appeals tribunal, to reinstate her as Makerere Institute of Social Research (MISR) research fellow research fellow.

The tribunal chaired by George Omunyokol, ruled against Dr Nyanzi’s suspension in 2016, saying it was illegal.

To the effect, it ordered her reinstatement and payment of her emoluments which were both disregarded by the University, prompting Nyanzi to run to court.

Hearing of her application by High court judge, Lydia Mugambe was scheduled to start on January 9, but Nyanzi informed court that she couldn’t proceed because she was unwell, following a miscarriage that she had in Luzira prison a week before.

Isaac Ssemakadde, who is her lawyer also asked for adjournment, saying he wanted to get some records detailing Nyanzi’s employment details at the University.

Meanwhile, Nyanzi remains on remand at Luzira prison on charges of cyber harassment when she allegedly posted on her Facebook wall indecent words against President Yoweri Museveni and his late mother Esiteeri Kokundeka in September last year, which post, was deemed to have intended to disturb the peace, quiet and right to privacy.
