The Kamwenge district chairman, Aggrey Natuhamya has called for unity among district leaders as the Presidential pledge to create a new district named Kitagwenda finally nears fruition.

According to Natuhamya, the new Kitagwenda district will start operating effective July 1 this year, after eight years of waiting.

“We have for long waited for a district but it will now start in July this year as the president pledged,” Natumanya told this news website in an exclusive interview on Monday.

He said arrangements are ongoing to inaugurate Kitagwenda as a district, which decision he said was unanimously supported by the Kamwenge district council.

The decision was taken in a Council sitting in 2011 when councillors seconded Gaston Kaliisa, the former councillor for Buhanda sub-county, who asked that Kitagwenda County be granted a district status.

He said with a population of 129,600, at the time, and natural resources such as Lake George, Queen Elizabeth National Park and the Dura Quarry Mines, Kitagwenda deserved to be a separate district.

“Even though Kitagwenda will soon be curved from Kamwenge, a lot of unity and cooperation is needed towards development on the part of leaders in both districts.

“There are some of the services [for Kitagwenda] which will still be handled by Kamwenge as its mother district. Among those are judicial related services and the district service commission,” explained Natuhamya.

“Therefore for that reason, this will require good relations for leadership on both sides so that these services are delivered effectively without pushbacks”.

He says the creation of Kitagwenda will serve purposes of direct extension of service delivery to the locals.
