“It was hijacked along the highway and the owner reported  to us .We had to alert our counterparts,” Patrick Munyaro,  from the Kenyan Directorate of Criminal Investigations told journalists at Interpol in Kampala.

He said they were notified later  that the vehicle had been recovered in the northern Uganda district of  Nwoya and that 3 Kenyan suspects including Hussein Akako, Gerald Mwangi Kariuki and Gabriel Njoroge Mbugua had been apprehended for the theft.

Speaking to journalists, Uganda Interpol Director Dr. Fred Yiga hailed the cooperation between the police forces of the 2 countries.

“We hope to maintain this cooperation under East African Police Chiefs Cooperation (EAPCCo) to help reduce cross border crimes,” Dr.Yiga noted.

A number of  other vehicles stolen from Uganda and recovered in neighboring countries including Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan were also displayed to journalists at the Interpol headquarters in Kololo.

Police said these had been stolen and taken across borders by thugs and were destined to be sold .

The number of car robberies have increased in the East African region with a number of them taken to neighboring countries.
