The Prime Minister, Ruhakana Rugunda has paid tribute to the former Attorney General, Peter Nyombi noting that there is no serious reason as to why a special sitting of Parliament has not been called to pay respects to the late.

The former Attorney General died on Sunday and his body is currently lying in State at Parliament for public viewing. Thereafter, it will will be taken for burial at the ancestral home in Nakasongola.

“Our late brother made enormous contribution to the country, worked with the Attorney General’s chambers, worked with the Inspector General of Government office and was the Attorney General of Uganda. And in all these responsibilities, he worked very well,” Rugunda said.

The Premier said that the country pays tribute to him and appreciates his contribution in building of key national institutions.

Rugunda however explained that Parliament could not hold a special sitting for Nyombi because the House is still in recess until November 6.

“Because Parliament is in recess, it was decided by government and Parliament to come and pay tribute to him now when he is lying in State. When Parliament reconvenes, on the floor of Parliament, his colleagues and friends will be able to articulate their tributes to him highlighting his contributions,” Rugunda explained.

He was however tasked to explain why members couldn’t be recalled from recess yet this has always been done for other former legislators. Rugunda explained that a special sitting will at a later date be held to allow members pay tribute to him.

“All put into consideration, it is right that government and Parliament should be thorough in streamlining of its activities. And we think it is very appropriate for our brother to come and be laid in State in Parliament where it is convenient for the public and all colleagues to come and view his body.”

“When the whole of Parliament reconvenes, instead of having partial attendance, we shall have a full House of Parliament paying tribute to him which will be a more coordinated, more organized befitting send off.”
