Bobi Wine Likely to be Transferred to Civilian Court

MP for Kyadondo East, Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine).

Detained MP for Kyadondo East, Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine is due to be tried in Gulu district before the military court martial today, Thursday.

Last week, Bobi Wine together with three other MPs were arrested in Arua district on the last day of campaigns during the municipality by-election. He was Friday arraigned before the military court in Gulu district and formally charged with illegal possession of a fire arm and ammunition which the army alleges were discovered in his hotel room in Arua.

Upon being charged in what was a court session closed to the press, Kyagulanyi was remanded to Makindye military barracks in Kampala until August 23 (tomorrow) when he was supposed to reappear.

While many anticipated that his trial would be in Kampala on Thursday, it emerged later on Wednesday that he would be transfered to Gulu again. Observers suspect this move was informed by the possibility of more riots and protests in Kampala.

A source within circles that is privy to the details of the case told this website that Bobi Wine is likely to be transferred to a civilian court. The same source who preferred anonymity also said that there are high chances that the legislator as well as his colleagues will thereafter be released on bail.

Social media has for the last one week been clogged with calls for the release of Bobi Wine. There were also riots in parts Kampala, Mukono and Jinja in which scores were left injured and others arrested.

Some people including lawyer Male Mabirizi who recently filed a suit before the constitutional court, have also contested his trial in a military court yet he is a civilian.
