A group of 10 Ugandan Chevening scholars who are currently pursuing their masters degrees at various universities in the United Kingdom have been hosted by Uganda’s high commission in London, with promise for closer links.

The meeting took place on Thursday last week.

The scholars, who started their studies in September last year, are due to complete their one-year programme later this year. They had travelled to London from across U.K to take part in activities organised on July 4 by the Chevening Secretariat to mark the formal end of their programme.

A day later, on June 5, the Chevening scholars made a courtesy call on the Ugandan High Commission in London, which hosted them to a meeting at the High Commission and, later, a luncheon at Thai Square, a restaurant near Trafalgar Square.

The Head of the Consular Department at Uganda’s mission, Mrs Juliet Mugerwa Namiiro, welcomed the scholars to Uganda House in London, saying the mission was happy to host the group at their home away from home.

During the meeting, the Minister Counsellor for Commercial and Economic Matters, Godfrey Kwoba, said Uganda’s mission to the U.K was delighted to host the scholars and expressed regret that such interaction had not happened earlier.

The scholars suggested that the Mission should put in place an arrangement to regularly meet future Cheveners, as well as winners of other related masters study grants such as the Commonwealth and the Commonwealth-shared scholarships who fly the country’s flag at different universities in the U.K.

The Uganda Mission officials welcomed the idea and pledged to follow up on it.

Chevening is the U.K government’s global scholarship programme that offers future leaders the unique opportunity to study in the U.K. These scholarships are awarded to outstanding professionals from different countries and beyond to pursue a one-year master’s degree in any subject at any UK university.

The program provides fully-funded scholarships, leaving the scholar free to focus on achieving their academic goals. The scholars live and study in the U.K for a year, during which time they develop professionally and academically, grow their network, experience U.K culture, and build lasting positive relationships with the UK.

Below is a list of Uganda’s chevening scholarship recipients for the 2017/18 academic year
