Nankabirwa: Museveni Already Penalizing Pro-age Limit NRM MPS

NRM chief whip, Ruth Nankabirwa (R) speaking to the press at Parliament

The NRM Chief Whip, Ruth Nankabirwa has revealed that some NRM Pro-age Limit MPs are already begging for mercy after President Yoweri Museveni took a decision to institute disciplinary action against them for acting against the party position during the 2017 age limit debate.

Atleast 27 NRM Members of the Parliament caucus voted against the Age Limit removal last year an act that was against the party decision.

Nankabirwa told reporters at Parliament on Wednesday that the caucus leadership took a decision to pardon the rebel MPs without taking any disciplinary action against them.

“I didn’t call them for disciplinary action. I just let it as it was, but I know I will be required to report to Central Executive Committee (CEC) of the party because ever since we finished the Bill, CEC hasn’t sat,” Nankabirwa said.

She however noted that the President hasn’t just let the issue go and has started taking actions against the errant members.

“There is an action which the Chairman of NRM took and some of them have already started coming to me to express their concern about the action,” Nankabirwa said.

“There are some who have requested me to organize a meeting with the President and I have advised them to write to the President,” Nankabirwa added.

She said that the President has employed one of the methods of conflict resolution which include avoidance, keeping quiet and summoning.

“The President chose one and it is working”.

However, some of the rebel MPs have responded back to Nankabirwa noting that they will never apologize for the right decision that they took.

The members led by Kumi Woman MP, Monica Amoding, Mukono South MP, Muyanja Ssenyonga, Kasanda North MP, Patrick Nsamba and the Manjiya County MP, John Baptist Nambeshe made the vow while responding to the party Chief Whip Ruth Nankabirwa .

The MPs told the media at Parliament that they have no reason to apologize and don’t regret their decision to vote against the lifting of the age limit from the Constitution saying they were representing the views of their electorate.

Amoding explained that although they are free to meet the President as NRM MPs, the reasons for the meeting have to be very clear and that regarding the last year’s constitutional amendments can’t be inclusive.

“We are not regretting and we can’t apologize for what we did. If there was voting today, we would still vote No. I represented the people of Kumi and that was the majority vote requesting to vote against the age limit removal,” she said.

“I disassociate myself from such callas submissions of my Chief whip. There is nothing to regret or ask for forgiveness about because there is nothing wrong we did”.
