The Gaaga bus Reg No UAK 562L from Lira to Kampala is said to have rammed into a tractor Reg No UAU 872M near Karuma at around 8pm. Reports say the bus driver was trying to overtake a tractor but in the process he lost control and knocked head on with a trailer Reg No UAT 321M which was carrying crates of beer.

Initial reports had placed the death toll at over 30 people while Red Cross had stated 40 deaths. However, in a statement released Saturday, Police said 22 people, including 4 juveniles had lost their lives in the accident.

“The number of the dead in this accident earlier explained is 22; including 4 juveniles, 18 adults,” Police tweeted on Saturday.

Among the adults who died, according to Police, 4 are female while 12 are male.

Police had Friday night dispatched its emergency personnel to rescue survivors. Ambulances evacuated some while the others were airlifted to Kampala in a military chopper.

Those dead include: Obedigu Charles, Etunu Levi Okwir, Mwirangireyo Mborera, Bogere Akamada, Marisur Asibuk, Mulinde William, Aloro Anthony, Norman Mugumya and Omara Joshua.

Others are Kisambira Said, Plate Geoffrey, Thembo Samson, Langalanga Jimy, Kawala Diana, Akiro Brendah, Kalemera David, Asikou George and Kyatuhaire Solome.

“We continue to thank all those that have been working in saving lives plus the Police officers that worked since last evening in service of the people,” Police said.
