A UPDF soldier attached to Uganda Revenue Authority, Mpondwe border in Kasese was on Wednesday night attacked by armed robbers loosing her gun in the incident.
According to the Kigezi regional Police spokesperson, Elly Maate, the victim, Gladia Amenyo, a 27 years old Customs Enforcement Officer at Mpondwe border was in possession of an AK 47 gun no. 56-11804661 with 30 rounds of ammunition when unknown thugs attacked her and stole it alongside other personal belongings.
It is alleged that on Wednesday at around 2:30pm, a motor vehicle Isuzu Reg. No. UAZ 782M loaded with Gonja bananas and palm oil set off from Mpondwe customs in Kasese district, heading to Democratic Republic of Congo via Queen Elizabeth national park in Kanungu district.
At about 11:30pm, when they were about 1 km to reach Ishasha customs, Kanungu district, two armed men in plain cloth emerged from the bush and started shooting. They had one gun AK 47 and a panga.
They shot one in air, and another directly at the co-driver’s seat, injuring Amenyo on the right arm, just above the elbow.
Maate added that all other occupants, like the driver and the two owners of the goods freed the vehicle, leaving behind the injured soldier. Thugs then approached her and disarmed her taking along a handbag which contained her phones and other documents.
UPDF and police reached at the scene recovering the cartridge and some documents which were dropped from the stolen bag.
The victim is currently admitted at Kihihi Health Centre IV pending further treatment as investigations into the matter continue.
