Uganda’s creative industry delivered a powerful statement of talent, innovation and ambition as the inaugural Uganda Festival of Creativity convened some of the country’s brightest creative minds, industry leaders, innovators and emerging talent in Kampala.

Organized by the Uganda Advertising Association (UAA) under the theme “The Bold Rise,” the festival marked a momentous step in the evolution of the Silverback Awards, expanding the annual celebration of advertising excellence into a broader platform for ideas, learning, collaboration and the discovery of Uganda’s next generation of creative talent.

One of the day’s most remarkable highlights was the showcase of Atom, a six-foot-tall humanoid robot developed by Duncan, a student at Light College Katikamu.

Built from scratch using approximately 95% recycled and scrap materials, including discarded metal, salvaged wiring, electric motors and other locally available components, Atom captured the imagination of festival attendees and offered a compelling glimpse into the ingenuity of young Ugandans.

Designed as a practical educational tool, the robot demonstrates basic movement, interactive responses and facial recognition capabilities. Duncan’s ambition is to make robotics, coding and engineering more accessible to African students by allowing them to experience technology beyond textbooks and classroom theory.

The festival offered a refreshing mix of conversations, demonstrations, exhibitions and performances that challenged conventional thinking about creativity. From a Gen-Z takeover panel and a conversation on creating viral content without compromising authenticity by Uncle Mo, to an artificial intelligence demonstration exploring the changing relationship between technology and creative work by Felix Kitaka, the program reflected an industry increasingly willing to question established approaches and embrace new possibilities.

Music, fashion, film and storytelling were equally prominent. Discussions explored the influence of Amapiano on contemporary culture, the importance of regional voices in shaping Uganda’s creative identity and the growing opportunities for young filmmakers.

A fashion runway experience by fashion designer, Lincoln Axarya, creative exhibitions and a lively exploration of Uganda’s meme culture brought additional energy to a festival that celebrated creativity in its many forms.

Speaking at the festival, Peter Kazibwe, UAA Chairman, said the event represented an important shift in how Uganda recognises and nurtures creativity.

“What we need are more platforms that bring that talent into the open, challenge it and connect it to opportunity. The Festival of Creativity was conceived to bring together people who would not ordinarily share the same creative spaces.”

The festival also created space for established industry figures to share their journeys and lessons with younger practitioners.

Among the highlights was a Founders Talk featuring Ariho Kamara, CEO of Nomad Advertising, alongside keynote conversations exploring how Ugandan stories can compete globally and what the country’s creative industry must build next.

The celebration of creativity continues with the Silverback Awards Gala on Saturday, 7 November 2026, at Kampala Serena Hotel, where Uganda’s outstanding advertising campaigns, brands, agencies and creative professionals will be recognized for work that has pushed boundaries and raised industry standards.
