Kampala’s nightlife was treated to a night of music, energy and celebration on Friday, 2 October, as Ugandan DJ The Last Gal successfully staged her highly anticipated maiden concert at Guvnor Street.
The event attracted a strong turnout, with music lovers and entertainment personalities gathering to support the rising electronic music DJ as she marked a major milestone in her career.
Popularly known as The Last Gal, Kanyunyuzi Rachel Heyzo headlined the show, making her mark as one of the few female DJs in Uganda to stage a major headline concert of this scale. The show further positioned her as the second female DJ in Uganda to successfully put together a concert of such magnitude.
The night brought together some of Kampala’s leading DJs and entertainers, creating a powerful showcase of Uganda’s diverse DJ culture.
The heavyweight lineup featured DJ Roja, Slick Stuart, Selector Jay, DJ Lito, DJ Jose, Fem DJ, DJ Mercy and Sir Aludah, who each brought their distinctive sound and energy to the Guvnor Street stage.
The entertainment was complemented by MCs Izzy the Business, Saint Trevor, Hanz MC and Morgan MC, who kept the crowd engaged throughout the night.
The successful turnout was a significant moment for The Last Gal, whose musical journey has continued to gain momentum since she began her DJ career in 2022 at Gong Academy under the mentorship of Derrick Files. After taking a break in 2023 to pursue her studies and further develop her skills, she returned to Uganda in February 2024, a period she has previously identified as a turning point in her career.
Known for her passion for electronic music, particularly house and garage, The Last Gal has steadily carved out a unique identity within Kampala’s nightlife scene, offering an alternative sound to the Afrobeats, dancehall and Amapiano genres that dominate the mainstream entertainment space.
Her maiden concert was therefore more than a performance; it was a celebration of her growth, resilience and evolution as a DJ, while also demonstrating the growing space for female DJs to take centre stage and headline major entertainment events.
The strong audience response and impressive lineup at Guvnor Street marked a significant chapter in The Last Gal’s career and reinforced her growing presence within Uganda’s electronic music and entertainment industry.
