By the time the last putts had dropped at the Lake Victoria Serena Golf Resort and Spa, in Kigo, the competition of the day had begun to give way to something more leisurely. The Captain’s Putter had brought golfers onto the course earlier in the day, but at the Marina Club House, the evening belonged to the Johnnie Walker Blue Club, a gathering where golf, whisky, music and conversation came together to mark the end of a day well spent.
Hosted by Uganda Breweries Limited chairman, who also doubles as the Serena Golf Club Captain, Jimmy Mugerwa, the evening was less about the scorecards and more about the moments around them: friendships formed, milestones reached and the simple pleasure of pausing to appreciate life’s finer things. For Mugerwa, bringing people together was central to the experience.
“The tournament is as much about bringing people together as it is about competition,” Mugerwa said, describing golf as an opportunity to create relationships and enjoy each other’s company away from the usual demands of work.
That sentiment continued into the Blue Club gathering, where guests moved from the course to an atmosphere of relaxed conversation, food and whisky. The Johnnie Walker team used the occasion to introduce guests to the ritual of whisky appreciation, with Reserve Brand Ambassador Steven Baguma taking them through the importance of engaging the senses. Guests were encouraged to look at the whisky, explore its aroma, take a measured sip and pay attention to the flavours and the finish.
Christine Kyokunda, Johnnie Walker East Africa Brand Manager, said that sense of connection is central to what the Blue Club seeks to create.
“We are proud to be part of the inaugural Captain’s Putter and to celebrate a captain who continues to bring people together beyond golf. This is more than just a tournament. It is about the people, the conversations, the relationships and the experiences that happen around the game,” Kyokunda said.
Myko Ouma and his band provided the evening’s first major musical highlight, bringing live instrumentation and familiar songs to the lakeside setting. Later, Elijah Kitaka took over, carrying the evening deeper into celebration, as guests relaxed, sang along and continued their conversations. There was also something fitting about the pairing of golf and Johnnie Walker. Golf is a game of patience, precision and progression, qualities that sit comfortably alongside the brand’s long-running philosophy of “Keep Walking”.
Guests were taken through the requirements of being part of the Johnnie Walker BlueClub- East Africa’s most luxurious whisky club.
And so, as glasses were raised at the Marina Club House, the evening became less a conclusion to a golf tournament than a celebration of what happens after the competition: the stories, friendships, music and shared experiences that remain long after the final score has been recorded.
