The sixth edition of the Makerere University Marathon will take place on Sunday, September 27, 2026, with proceeds going towards equipping the university’s Disability Support Centre.

The marathon, organised by Makerere University through the Makerere University Endowment Fund (MAKEF), will start and finish at Freedom Square.

The 2026 edition will feature 5km, 10km, 21km and 42km races, alongside a 3km wheelchair race.

According to Makerere University, the marathon is intended to raise resources for assistive equipment to support students with disabilities in reading, typing, hearing and participating in academic activities.

The university said the initiative is part of its efforts to ensure that disability does not become a barrier to accessing higher education.

Marathon kits are available at Shs50,000 and can be purchased online.

The marathon has, over the past three years, raised funds to equip the university’s Disability Support Centre, which provides learning equipment, counselling and other support services to students with disabilities.

The university is calling on students, staff, alumni, corporate organisations, government agencies, development partners, athletes and members of the public to participate in the event.

Guild medical camp

Meanwhile, Makerere University will hold its annual Guild Medical Camp from September 17 to 18 at Freedom Square.

The two-day camp, organised by the Guild leadership under the Office of the Dean of Students, will run from 8 am to 5 pm each day.

The camp will provide free essential and specialised health services to students, staff and residents from the neighbouring community.

The two events were highlighted during the Vice Chancellor’s press conference held on September 15, 2026.

The briefing, attended by members of university management, staff and the media, is part of regular media engagements organised by Makerere’s Public Relations Office to provide updates on developments at the university.

The university holds the press briefings every two months, with the previous one held on July 15, 2026.

Infrastructure development

During the briefing, the Acting Second Deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of Finance and Administration and Principal of the College of Engineering, Design, Art and Technology (CEDAT), Prof. Moses Musinguzi, also updated journalists on the university’s infrastructure development projects.

Musinguzi said Makerere had undertaken extensive infrastructure expansion and renovation projects with funding from government, philanthropists and development partners.

“One of the infrastructures being the building that is going to house the graduate school, among others,” Musinguzi said.

The university said the infrastructure projects are intended to support its expanding academic programmes and improve facilities for students and staff.
