GLASGOW, Scotland — Uganda’s swimmers have achieved a historic milestone at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games after Jesse Ssengonzi and Tendo Kaumi qualified for semi-finals in their respective events.
Ssengonzi became the first Ugandan swimmer to reach a Commonwealth Games semi-final after qualifying in the men’s 100m butterfly.
He posted a time of 54.01 seconds in the heats to secure his place among the leading competitors.
Kaumi also produced a landmark performance by qualifying for the men’s 50m freestyle semi-finals after clocking 22.63 seconds.
The achievement marked the first time the Ugandan swimmer had reached a Commonwealth Games semi-final.
Meanwhile, Gloria also advanced to the women’s 100m freestyle semi-finals after recording a time of 55.88 seconds.
Uganda’s progress in the swimming events represents a significant step forward for the country’s aquatic sports programme, with athletes competing against some of the world’s best swimmers at the Glasgow Games.
