KAMPALA – Stanbic Black Pirates have been crowned 2026 National Rugby Premiership champions after edging Buffaloes RFC in a pulsating final that ended 30–29, sealing a dramatic title defence built on early dominance and late defensive resilience.
The defending champions made an explosive start, with Nathan Bwambale scoring in the fourth minute to put Pirates ahead. Buffaloes responded quickly through Yasin Waiswa, whose early penalties kept the contest finely balanced in the opening exchanges.
Pirates soon regained control, with Alex Aturinda crossing for a second try, followed by a successful conversion from William Nkore to extend the lead. Frank Kidega added a third try as the champions continued to apply relentless pressure.
The intensity forced the Buffaloes into early tactical changes, making two substitutions before halftime in an attempt to contain the Pirates’ attacking rhythm.
Bwambale returned to the spotlight with his second try of the match, and a further conversion helped Pirates head into the break with a commanding 25–13 lead.
Buffaloes, however, came out stronger in the second half, mounting a spirited comeback that saw both sides exchange tries in a tense and fast-paced period. The challengers gradually reduced the deficit, pushing the match into a nervy final phase decided by a single point.
Despite the Buffaloes’ late surge, the Pirates held firm under pressure to secure a 30–29 victory and successfully defend their premiership crown.

Stanbic Bank Uganda Chief Executive Mumba Kalifungwa congratulated the team, saying their triumph reflects discipline, resilience, and a commitment to excellence supported by the bank.

He added that the victory was particularly significant for the team after a demanding season. “The club badly needed this title, and I am delighted that they delivered. Their determination and resilience have paid off,” he noted.
Pirates captain Isaac Massanganzira dedicated the win to late teammate Sydney Gongodyo, saying the squad drew inspiration from his memory throughout the season.
“This victory is for Sydney. We carried his spirit with us every step of the way,” he said.
The triumph marks another milestone for Stanbic Black Pirates, who have now reached the National Rugby Premiership final for three consecutive seasons, further cementing their status as one of Uganda’s most dominant rugby sides.
Head coach Marvin Odongo praised his team’s mentality, saying their focus on winning from the outset proved decisive. “I never think about losing. My mindset is always focused on winning,” Odongo said.
While acknowledging a dip in performance in the second half, he credited the team’s early dominance for securing the narrow win. “We banked crucial points early, and that made the difference in the end,” he added.
Odongo said the team would briefly celebrate before turning attention to upcoming competitions and continued improvement in future campaigns.
