President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has called for vigilance against corruption and misuse of public resources as he officially began a new five-year term in office, urging Ugandans to actively monitor government programs and ensure accountability at all levels.
President Museveni made the remarks on Tuesday during his swearing-in ceremony at Kololo Independence Grounds in Kampala, where he was inaugurated for a seventh term after winning the January 15, 2026, presidential election.
The ceremony attracted several African Heads of State, foreign delegations, senior government officials and thousands of supporters under the theme: “Protecting the Gains as we make a Qualitative Leap into Higher Middle Income Status.”
After taking the oath administered by Chief Justice Flavian Zeija, President Museveni used his inaugural speech to stress that Uganda’s next phase of development would depend on wealth creation, job generation and proper management of public resources.
He warned that government programs intended to fight poverty and transform livelihoods would only succeed if corruption and misuse of funds were eliminated. “The message of the NRM is of two words, wealth and job creation,” President Museveni said.
He called upon citizens to actively supervise government initiatives, especially the Parish Development Model (PDM), to ensure public money reaches intended beneficiaries. “The problem is with you now, to do your part, and your part is in two areas: wealth and job creation,” he said.
President Museveni emphasised that all Ugandans must take responsibility in safeguarding government interventions from abuse, noting that the new term would be a “term of no sleep and no more corruption.” “During this term, we don’t need people to sleep and then start blaming this and that, yet we have the medication,” he said.
