KAMPALA — The Makerere University 92nd Electoral Commission has officially declared Kadondi Gracious as the Guild President-elect following a closely contested election held on Thursday, April 9, 2026.
According to the official results announced by Electoral Commission Chairperson Owomugisha Maureen, Kadondi secured a total of 6,801 votes, emerging as the overall winner in a competitive race.
“By the powers invested in me by the Makerere University Students Guild Constitution 2022, I hereby declare Kadondi Gracious as the 92nd Guild President-Elect,” the chairperson stated in the official declaration.
Her closest challenger, Hannah Karema, polled 5,787 votes, according to the final tally.
Victory after a tense campaign
Kadondi’s win follows a high-energy campaign season marked by strong student mobilisation and occasional tensions. Earlier in the week, her campaign team raised concerns over the cancellation of a planned “Street Jam” event that was expected to feature popular artists, including King Saha and Nina Roz.
Despite the setback, Kadondi maintained a steady lead throughout the voting process and ultimately secured a decisive mandate from the student body.
Electoral Commission praises peaceful process
The Electoral Commission commended candidates and students for participating in a largely peaceful election conducted under the Makerere University Students Guild Statute 2022.
In a statement, the Dean of Students at Makerere University welcomed the outcome, noting: “Gallant Makereans, please receive official results declared by the EC Chairperson @owomugishaMomo! We congratulate H.E Gracious Kadondi upon her win.”
Official notification to university leadership
The Commission confirmed that the final results have been transmitted to the University Council, the Vice Chancellor, and the Dean of Students, in line with electoral procedures.
Kadondi Gracious is expected to be sworn in later this month, officially succeeding the 91st Guild leadership as the 92nd Guild President of Makerere University.
