Chelangat surged ahead in the closing stages of the 42.195-kilometre race in Barcelona, Spain, holding off a strong challenge from Kenyan rivals to cross the finish line first in one of the fastest times recorded at the event.

Kenya’s Patrick Mosin finished second in 2:05:01, just four seconds behind the Ugandan, while fellow Kenyan Jonathan Korir claimed third place in 2:05:29, completing a tightly contested podium.

The victory came after a fast-paced race in which the lead pack maintained a high tempo for much of the course before Chelangat launched a decisive move in the final kilometres to break away from his rivals.

Chelangat’s winning mark is also among the quickest performances ever recorded on the Barcelona course, which is known for producing elite marathon times and attracts top international athletes each year.

The triumph adds another highlight to Uganda’s growing reputation in global long-distance running and reinforces the country’s continued presence among the world’s elite marathoners.

Chelangat’s victory was part of a thrilling race day in Barcelona that also saw Ethiopia’s Fotyen Tesfay win the women’s marathon with a historic performance on debut.

For Uganda, Chelangat’s triumph stands as a proud moment for the nation’s athletics community and further showcases the country’s depth in long-distance running.
