In a notice to students and the general public, the university said the adjustment follows a nationwide directive requiring all schools and higher institutions to delay reopening until February 10, 2026. The ministry cited student safety during the General Elections as the reason for shifting the original reopening date.

As a result, Semester Two at Makerere University will now run from February 10 to June 6, 2026. The university has issued a revised academic calendar to reflect the changes.

Revised Semester Two Calendar (2025/2026)

According to the updated calendar:

  • Semester One Holidays: Saturday, December 6, 2025, to Monday, February 9, 2026
  • Teaching and Learning: Wednesday, February 11, 2026, to Saturday, May 16, 2026
  • Semester Two Examinations: Monday, May 18, 2026, to Saturday, June 6, 2026
  • Recess Period: Saturday, June 6, 2026, to Saturday, August 1, 2026

The full semester, covering teaching, learning, and examinations, will span 17 weeks, followed by an eight-week recess period, during which alternative modes of recess will apply.

Blended Learning to Continue

Makerere University said it will continue to use Blended Teaching and Learning, combining physical classroom instruction with online and Open, Distance and e-Learning (ODEL) methods.

National Reopening Directive

The Ministry of Education and Sports has directed that all schools, international schools, tertiary institutions, and universities across Uganda reopen on Tuesday, February 10, 2026.

The directive, issued by the Permanent Secretary, Dr Kedrace R. Turyagyenda, requires strict compliance by all education administrators.

For other institutions, Term One will run from February 10 to May 1, 2026.

Makerere University management has urged students and staff to take note of the revised dates and plan accordingly.
