The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) announced on Sunday, 18 January 2026, the full restoration of public internet access across the country, following the successful conclusion of the 2026 General Elections and a comprehensive security assessment.

Speaking at a press briefing, UCC Executive Director Hon. Nyombi Thembo emphasised that the temporary suspension of internet services had been a “necessary and proportionate step” to safeguard public order, curb the spread of misinformation, and protect the integrity of the electoral process.

“As of midnight today, general public internet access has been fully restored,” Thembo said. “This includes web browsing, access to news websites, educational resources, government portals, financial services, email, and other essential online activities.”

The phased restoration comes as a balance between national stability and the legitimate needs of citizens for information, communication, and economic activity. While general internet access has resumed, social media platforms and messaging apps remain temporarily restricted, the Commission noted, to prevent misuse that could threaten public order.

Hon. Thembo urged Ugandans to embrace responsible digital citizenship. “The internet is a powerful tool for development, education, business, and staying connected with loved ones — let us use it to build, not to destroy,” he said.

He added: “Avoid sharing or amplifying unverified information, hate speech, inflammatory content, or anything that could incite violence or disturb the peace we have all worked to preserve. Freedom comes with responsibility.”

The Executive Director highlighted the role of security agencies in guiding the measures and reassured the public that authorities remain vigilant. “Any attempt to use the restored internet to organise or incite disorder, spread falsehoods, or undermine national stability will not be tolerated,” he warned.

Concluding the briefing, Hon. Thembo thanked internet operators for their compliance, the media for responsible engagement, and citizens for their patience during the temporary restriction. “The restoration of public internet marks an important step forward as we move beyond the election period. Together, we can continue building the Uganda we all deserve,” he said.

The UCC confirmed that it will continue monitoring digital spaces closely and will provide updates should further adjustments be required.
