President Yoweri Museveni has given the green light to a proposal by the developers of China-Uganda Mbale Industrial Park to establish a second industrial park. The announcement came after Museveni and First Lady Janet Museveni met with a delegation led by Ms Lucy Zhang, CEO of the park’s developer, at their Rwakitura country home.
Zhang briefed the President on the Mbale facility’s progress and formally expressed interest in expanding to a new location. Museveni welcomed the plan, assuring investors of government support.
The existing 619-acre Mbale park has been operational since 2018, hosting 75 factories and employing over 12,000 Ugandans. With $2.5 billion invested, the park produces goods for local and regional markets.
Museveni said, “A team from Mbale Industrial Park, led by Ms Lucy Zhang, visited Maama Janet and I at Rwakitura this evening. They updated us on the park’s progress and expressed their intention to establish another industrial park. I welcome their plan and assured them of our support.”
The government is working to secure an additional 500 acres for the park’s expansion.
