Uganda has received eight southern white rhinos from South Africa, marking a major boost to the country’s conservation and tourism efforts.

The rhinos arrived at Entebbe International Airport at 2:30 a.m. on Monday before being transported to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary in Nakasongola for quarantine and acclimatisation.

The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) confirmed on Tuesday afternoon that the first rhino had officially touched the ground at Ziwa, where the animals will undergo veterinary monitoring. “The first rhino has touched the ground at Ziwa. Keep following for more updates,” UWA announced.

The eight rhinos—four males and four females—were donated by African Parks from Munyawana Conservancy in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Their arrival raises Uganda’s total rhino population to 59, all under active protection.

Representing the Minister for Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities, Director of Tourism Dr Basil Ajer praised the milestone as a sign of growing confidence in Uganda’s conservation systems. “We are optimistic about the steady growth of Uganda’s rhino population. This is a significant step in rebuilding and strengthening our conservation efforts,” Dr Ajer said.

UWA’s Acting Executive Director, Commissioner for Biodiversity Management John Makombo, welcomed the animals and emphasised long-term protection and care.

“This is an important moment for Uganda’s conservation journey. We remain committed to ensuring these rhinos receive the best care and long-term protection,” Makombo noted.

UWA spokesperson Bashir Hangi shared images of the convoy transporting the animals to Ziwa, noting the significance of the transfer. “From the Rainbow Nation to the Pearl of Africa. Eight rhinos are on their way from Entebbe airport to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary. Their arrival brings the total number of rhinos in Uganda to 59,” he said.

The donation supports Uganda’s ongoing Rhino Restoration Programme, which aims to reintroduce rhinos to their former habitats.

Plans are underway to move some rhinos from Ziwa to Kidepo Valley National Park and Ajai Wildlife Reserve as part of the long-term strategy to re-establish breeding populations across multiple protected areas.

African Parks representative Martine Rickelton said the contribution reflects a shared commitment to strengthening Uganda’s wildlife heritage. “This donation supports Uganda’s ambition to re-establish rhinos across more protected areas. We are proud to be part of this conservation effort,” she said.

The eight rhinos will remain under close observation at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary before being integrated into wider restoration plans.
